What is ADHD?

ADHD describes a lifelong 'neurotype' or 'brain type' that impacts how you process information, regulate focus, manage motivation, and organise your day-to-day thoughts.

ADHD is something you are born with, though many adults are not formally identified until much later in life when professional, financial, or personal demands escalate. It is not an illness to be 'cured'; rather, an adult ADHD brain simply processes the world differently than a 'neurotypical' brain. Understanding your neurotype allows you to stop fighting against your natural processing style and find tailored strategies for attention regulation, planning, and executive functioning.

Common ways ADHD manifests in adulthood:

  • Executive Dysfunction: Severe friction when trying to start or complete tasks, leading to chronic procrastination on critical items.

  • Time & Space Logistics: Persistent challenges with day-to-day organisation, prioritising workloads, and time management.

  • Memory Fatigue: Frequently misplacing belongings, losing track of conversations, or forgetting appointments.

  • Internal Restlessness: An inability to sit still, an overwhelming sense of internal restlessness, or a constantly racing mind.

  • Attention Splitting: Easily distracted by external stimuli while simultaneously capable of intense, exhausting blocks of hyperfocus.

The Adult Assessment Process

Step 1: Clinical Screening Appointment

A dedicated initial consultation to map your adult experiences, review your history, and decide if moving forward to a full diagnostic evaluation will give you the answers you need.

Step 2: Main Assessment & Information Gathering

We utilise precise, evidence-based tools to gather an objective profile of your cognitive processing:

  • The QbCheck: A specialised, computer-based assessment that directly measures attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. By tracking your responses, it provides an objective, data-backed measure of your focus consistency and impulse control.

  • Individual Clinical Interview: An in-depth, professional interview discussing your current lifestyle, challenges, and cognitive patterns.

  • Childhood History Informant Interview: Because ADHD is a lifelong neurotype, diagnostic guidelines require evidence of these traits existing during your early years. This involves an interview with someone who knew you during childhood (e.g., a parent or sibling). Where this is genuinely not possible, we can interview someone who has known you exceptionally well for a long time currently.

Step 3: MDT Review & Feedback

Our multi-disciplinary team collaboratively analyses all diagnostic inputs. We sit down with you in a supportive feedback session to explain what the findings mean for your past, present, and future.

Step 4: Comprehensive Clinical Report

You will be provided with a thorough, professionally accredited report. This document acts as an official framework for your workplace adjustments, future medical steps, and personal self-understanding.

Unlocking Workplace & Academic Support

A formal gold-standard report from Wellcare provides the legal and clinical weight required to secure meaningful changes in your environment. We specifically tailor our recommendations to support you with:

  • Access to Work Applications: Securing government-funded specialist coaching, equipment, or software.

  • Reasonable Adjustments: Providing your employer with a clear, professional blueprint for environmental modifications, flexible working, or communication adjustments.

  • Higher Education Support: Securing Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA) and university exam accommodations.

An Inclusive and Affirming Sanctuary

Traditional diagnostic criteria were historically built around children, meaning countless adults - particularly women, high-flying professionals, and marginalised groups - were completely overlooked.

At Wellcare, our practice is deeply intersectional, culturally competent, and strictly LGBTQ+ and gender-affirming. We intimately understand the high overlap between diverse gender identities and neurodivergence, ensuring you can show up as your absolute, authentic self without fear of judgment or misunderstanding.
