Autism Assessments for Children & Young People

From Uncertainty to a Definitive Path Forward

As a parent, you know your child better than anyone. If you have noticed that they experience the world differently, struggle to cope in traditional school environments, communicate uniquely, or face intense sensory overload, you aren't just looking for a label - you are looking for answers.

Too often, families face agonisingly long waiting lists or cold, clinical environments that leave their children feeling overwhelmed and misunderstood.

At our Beverley clinic, we do things differently. We provide a gold-standard, neuro-affirming assessment pathway that treats your child with deep respect, gentle care, and absolute integrity. We provide a sensory-safe sanctuary where your child can be entirely themselves, giving your family the clarity and support you deserve.

What is Autism?

Autism is a term used to describe a naturally occurring ‘brain type’ or ‘neurotype’ that shapes how a child experiences, processes, and interacts with the world around them.

An autistic child’s brain processes sensory information, language, and social environments differently from the majority (often referred to as 'neurotypical'). Being autistic is a lifelong, natural form of neurodiversity. It is a fundamental part of who your child is, not a condition to be 'cured.' While an autistic child brings unique perspectives and deep strengths to the world, navigating environments primarily built for neurotypical minds can sometimes feel overwhelming. Our goal is to help identify their processing style so home and school can become deeply supportive spaces.

Common differences an autistic child may experience:

  • Social Communication: Engaging in direct, honest communication and developing meaningful, authentic ways of connecting, interacting, and playing with others.

  • Sensory Processing: Heightened or lowered sensitivity to sensory inputs - such as clothing textures, loud noises, bright lights, or food textures.

  • Deep Passions & Focus: The capacity to develop intense, joyful interests in specific topics, themes, or toys, often leading to incredible areas of knowledge and expertise.

  • Predictability & Routines: A strong comfort in routines, sameness, and predictable schedules, which helps them feel safe and reduce anxiety during daily transitions.

  • Emotional & Energy Regulation: Needing dedicated time and quiet spaces to process the school day, as sensory or social environments can sometimes lead to emotional exhaustion or overload.

The Multidisciplinary Advantage

We completely reject the traditional "deficit-based" approach. Our assessments are thorough, robust, and strictly adhere to UK NICE guidelines. This ensures that your final report carries the absolute clinical weight required by the NHS, local authorities, and schools.

Because a child's development is multifaceted, our assessments are conducted by a Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) combining the expertise of Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy, and Occupational Therapy.

We don't just check boxes, we look at the whole child.

Our Focused 4-Week Pathway:

  1. Sensory-Safe Play & Clinical Observation We don't force children into rigid, intimidating testing formats. Our face-to-face sessions are held in our calm, low-stimulus Beverley rooms. We use gold-standard clinical tools disguised as play and comfortable interaction, allowing us to see how your child naturally communicates and processes their world.

  2. Comprehensive Developmental History We sit down with you to capture the full picture of your child’s development from infancy to the present day. We also collaborate directly with your child’s nursery or school to understand how they navigate social and learning environments.

  3. The 4-Week Delivery Window We believe that making families wait months for results is unacceptable. From the moment our assessment sessions are complete, our team works efficiently to compile, review, and deliver your comprehensive clinical report within four weeks.

  4. A Practical Roadmap for Home and School A Wellcare report is not just a diagnosis, it is a blueprint. We map your child’s unique profile, translating their behaviors into clear communication. We provide explicit, practical recommendations that your family and your child’s teachers can implement immediately.

Unlocking EHCP and Educational Support

One of the biggest hurdles families face is getting schools to recognise and fund a child's hidden needs. A gold-standard MDT report from Wellcare provides the definitive, robust evidence needed to change the narrative. Our reports are custom-written to support your family through:

  • Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP): Providing the precise clinical language and specific environmental recommendations required by local authorities.

  • School Adjustments: Giving teachers a clear guide on sensory modifications, communication strategies, and emotional regulation spaces.

  • Exam & Classroom Accommodations: Securing formal adjustments like extra time, rest breaks, or quiet room access.

A Celebrating and Inclusive Space

We know that autism can manifest very differently depending on the child. Traditional diagnostic profiles often miss girls, children who are highly skilled at "masking" their difficulties to fit in, and young people exploring diverse gender identities.

Our clinicians are highly specialised in spotting these subtle profiles. Our clinic is a strictly safe, celebratory, and LGBTQ+ affirming space where every young person is validated exactly as they are.

4 Steps to Your Assessment
